Cupore collaborates in the research with Arts Promotion Centre Finland, the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and Statistics Finland. In addition, various stages of the researchers are collaborating with artists’ associations, grant-making foundations and copyright organizations.
The objective of the research is to provide a solid and diverse information basis on the employment situation and social status of professional artists in Finland.
In the project, the professional artists are examined in the light of registry data. The main source of information for the research is Statistics Finland’s registers, which cover the entire population of Finland. Statistics Finland’s registers are limited and supplemented by the registers of the collaborating artists’ associations and grant-making foundations.
The professional artists are limited from the registry data by four criteria, which are:
- a membership of a trade union/interest organization,
- receiving copy right compensation as an artist,
- training of artists and
- receiving a grant.
In addition to the registry research, separate reports are carried out to answer the information needs identified in the registry analysis as well as in previous research.
In 2022–2023 Cupore carried out a research on the financing, structures and development needs of the visual arts. During 2022–2024 a study is being carried out on the cultural activities of municipalities as part of the development of visual art structures.
In addition, many other Cupore research projects also examine artists and their operating conditions. These include e.g. an annual Arts and Culture Barometer and a broader review of the distribution of public funding across different art fields and domains.
As an artist in Finland -research project will result in overviews on statistics, working papers and research reports. The results will be published on Cupore website, where they are freely available for download.
During 2023–2024 the research team consists of senior researchers Maria Hirvi-Ijäs (responsible for the project) and Sakarias Sokka and researchers Vappu Renko and Aino Leppänen.

Infrastructure as a Success Factor in the Visual Arts
The research on art and art policy aspects has shown that the infrastructure for artistic work within the visual arts is significantly weaker than in many other art fields. This is also reflected in the working conditions of professional artists. Total income for professionals in the visual arts is lower, and job well-being is worse than in many other art sectors. To ensure that the sector remains viable and that consumers can continue to access the services of the visual arts, the sectors infrastructures must be developed sustainably, taking into account the needs of professional artists. The development project "Infrastructure as a Success Factor in the Visual Arts" addresses this developmental need. Success here refers to enabling professional artists to work and grow in their profession in the long term.
